Peace Day

21st of September was an International Peace Day. Since Grade 5s studied Peace as part of the Unit of Inquiry we asked them to come and share with us what they know.
``What is a peace?``they asked from Grade 1 students. There was one hand up.
``Peace means that people do not fight,``said Evan.
``How can your keep the peace?``
``I do not fight with other students.I use words instead of hands.``said Evan again.
``If you feel really angry at someone count to 10 before you do or say anything, breathe in and out slowly or walk away and cool down,``suggested Sasha to our students.
``I do that all the time if I get angry and it helps me,``he added.
Then they talked a bit about Libya and why is there a war.
When the boys left Grade 1s knew that Peace means you are friendly and you do not fight.
At the end of the day each class painted ``Peace`` on the fabric. Soon we will see a big Peace Quilt that we painted together.
Thank you Ms. Reelika and Mr. Paulo for organizing a Peace Day!

Number Detectives

In Math we continue to explore the Number Sense.
We practice addition and subtraction facts using a variety of strategies.
One activity what students like is called Number Detective.
You play it with a partner. You secretly place some cubes in 2 paper cups. Your partner needs to be a Number Detective and count the cubes in the containers. Then tell how many cubes must be in the third cup. Finally record the action on the worksheet.

Harjumaa Museum

This Friday Grade 1 and 2 visited Harjumaa Museum.
At first we walked in the park and saw old castle ruins built by Germans.
Then our tour guide showed us a sacred stone. The old story tells us that a landlord beat to death his worker`s 7 sons. To remember this the father of those boys planted 7 lime trees around this stone. Even nowadays this place is sacred for people. They come and put candles on the stone.
In the museum we saw many household items that people used in old times. Such as coffee grinder,an old ``lunch box``, ``water bottle``, fishing tools, sewing machine to make shoes from leather and many other things.
Before we left we saw a huge model of Keila County.
I think everyone saw and learned something new on this trip. Thank you Ms. Maren for organizing it!

1 more and 2 more

In Math we started to explore the Number concept.
You have 7 and then you find out what is 1 more than 7 and what is 2 more than 7. Then the numbers get bigger.....

From letters to words

In Literacy we make words with short vowels(a,o,u,e,i).
Lucas is matching a picture and a word.

Axel tries to put an animal together from puzzle pieces. As his picture is together he can read the animals name as well.
Ugne and Austeja are creating new English words if they do not know the word in English.. They show that they can be risk-takers.
Veera, Vilja and Tilde love to play a card game where one person reads the question and others answer.
Tyler is busy putting the rhyming puzzle together. Good job everyone!

Sort the trash!

This week we had a student teacher Marie Louise from Germany in our class. She explained us how people sort the trash in Germany.

This is a fun game we played in class. You get a card and you need to think where that trash goes. Does it go to the paper, glass, plastic, metal or bio waste trash bin. I saw a lot of thinking and discussing during this game.
