An Architect Visit

Have you met an architect?
On Thursday we had an opportunity to meet an architect Hermas Lilleorg.
Students wanted to know why he became an architect?
He said that when he was a child he liked drawing houses and building with blocks. He knew already then that when he grows up he will be an architect. He said that his ideas just come to his head. Architects are creative.
Usually the client tells him what kind of house he would like to have. Then he thinks and starts to design the house/draw the plans. He uses the computer program called ArchiCAD 14. Students can use the same program at home if they want to try how to design the houses.
When he is designing the house he needs to think about the location of the house and what materials would be good. He consults with an engineer about the construction to make sure that the house is strong. Once he is finished with the plans then the builders start to build the house. In Estonia people use concrete, wood and bricks as building materials.
Thank you for the visit Hermas!

Exploring shapes

In Math we started to explore the shapes. We were wondering why should we learn about shapes? Students told me this.
``If you are an architect or engineer you need to know which shapes you can stack on top of each other and which you can not.``
``You need to draw the house plans.``
``If you want to build a dog house you need to know how to do it.``

Then we wondered where or when do you need the skills to recognize, sort, describe, compare and make connections?
``Every day in life.``

Rhyming Words

In Literacy we have been learning the short vowel(a,e,i,o,u) sounds and trying to find rhyming words for those words.
In this activity I read one sentence and then another. Students thought what word to use to end the second sentence. That word should rhyme with the word from the first sentence and make sense as well. They wrote those rhyming words on their whiteboards. In the beginning thinking of a rhyming word was a bit difficult but as we went on it became easier. Good job!

Our 2 recycling trips.

``I liked to walk to the Stockman because we could give away our plastic bottles.``Evan

´´We decided to recycle bottles because if you do not then your trash bin is going to be full and landfield will be full and then the whole world is going to be covered with plastic bottles.`` Lucas

On our first trip we were not able to give away the bottles because the machine was broken. We just put our batteries at the box at the store and carried our bottles back. On our second trip we were able to give the bottles away!!!!

Story Problems

This week students learned how to create and solve story problems.
First they worked in pairs and then alone.
They used manipulatives to help them count and sentence frames to help them write.
